Back in the 1950's Edward Murrow started an essay writing movement called "This I Believe".  He fashioned it as a way to hear what people where saying or writing.  This movement continues today on National Public Radio (NPR) where 350-500 word essays are read.  I haven't actually heard this program because I don't listen to NPR.

The concept really interests me and I have found, on www.thisibelieve.org some wonderful essays that opens the writer's heart and mind while exposing their belief, all in a few paragraphs. As a writer I see the challenge to write a small formatted essay on a belief - something that I hold dear to me.

A writer, who I enjoy reading, Joe Henderson, www.joehenderson.com, wrote an article for Marathon and Beyond, www.marathonandbeyond.com, which is made up of 100 word essays on his beliefs on various subjects that deal with running.  This series of short articles is both fun to read and the content very valuable.

I will be adding "As I Believe" essays to this blog.  Some I will write and some will be written by others.  My objective is to participate in this sharing of one's belief.  As Edward Murrow said back in 1951, "In this brief space, a banker or a butcher, a painter or a social worker... will write about the rules they live by, the things they have found to be the basic values in their lives."  How cool is that.
